Where's the Math!?

HEY MATHEMATICIANS!

We are so excited to be able to interact with you here on our website!  Check out the picture below and tell us about the math you see.

We can't wait to read all of your wonderful mathematical thinking!

Check back each week because there will be a new picture!

Hi Ronan! You gave a lot of great reasons why each one doesn't belong. Could you think about how 1 doesn't belong because all the other 3 are the same? For example... the bottom right doesn't belong because it is solid and all the others are striped.

1. Top left is different because the rest are green.
2. Top right is different because the rest have 2.
3. Bottom left is different because the rest are ovals.
4. Bottom right is different because the rest are striped.

#3 is not like the others because its a diamond shape and the others are ovals.

#4 is a solid green while the other shapes are striped.

#1 is red and the others are green.

#3 has 3 ovals and all others are 2 shapes

The bottom right doesn't belong because it is solid and the other three boxes have stripes.

The bottom left doesn't belong because it is a different shape than the other boxes.

The top right does not belong because it has three shapes and the other boxes have two.

all of them don't belong because one is red and the others are green. And the three stripe things doesn't belong because there are three stripe things not 2 like the rest.

NONE OF THEM BELONG.

Josie, you are right! There is not just one right answer. Both of your answers are correct. We could say the red one doesn't belong because it's the only one that isn't green. Or we could say the picture with 3 shapes doesn't belong because it's the only picture with 3 shapes instead of 2. I love that you really thought about this. You are quite a problem solver! <3, Mrs. Young

I think the one with no stripes does not belong because it does not have any stripes. The full green one is just colored in.

They all have similarities and differences. They all belong and they all stand out.

Top left is the only red but also has two shapes like two other pictures.
Top right is the only picture with three shapes but is also green like the other two.
Bottom left is the only picture with diamond shapes but is also green and striped like the others.
Bottom right is the only picture with solid green shapes but has just two shapes like the other two.

Tyris, I am so proud of you! You are 100% correct. Each card could be "the one" that doesn't belong for different reasons. You did a fabulous job explaining how each card is different from the rest for various reasons. Keep up the awesome work, my friend! <3, Mrs. Young

The top right one does not belong because it has three and all the others have two.

I think top left is different because it is a different color.
I think the bottom left is different because it is a different shape.
I think the bottom right is different because it is filled in with a different pattern.

I love it, Aiden! You are correct in that there are multiple right answers. All of your explanations make perfect sense. Now I'm wondering, can you figure out why the top right could be "the one" that doesn't belong?
Keep up the awesome work! You're quite a problem solver. <3, Mrs. Young

In a way all of them belong and don't belong.
Example:
1.Is pink
2.Has 3 not 2
3.No stripes
4.different shape

You are 100% correct, Nara! There is not one right answer. I love that you went through each of the cards and explained why it could be "the one" that doesn't belong. Keep being an awesome problem solver! <3, Mrs. Young

The bottom right doesn’t belong because it is solid. The bottom left doesn’t belong because it is a diamond. The top left doesn’t belong because it is red. The top right doesn’t belong because it has 3.
